Clock Works

The Trading Arm of The Clock

In August 2018 The Clock launched a new business venture – a social enterprise we have called ‘Clock Works’.  This has been created to be the umbrella organisation for a number of small businesses, each answering to a need we have identified through our engagement with our community.

These businesses will exist to do 3 things:

  • Make money to help fund the projects delivered by The Clock
  • Provide job, volunteering and skill development opportunities for local people
  • Be a place where the community can come together to share its resources (such as time, skills, places, ‘stuff’…) to create a positive social and environmental impact.

Clock Works Community Furniture Store

Our first business venture is already underway – it’s called Clock Works Community Furniture Store and will recycle and upcycle unwanted/donated furniture, so local people have access to good quality used household items and people have somewhere to send their surplus items other than landfill.  We will be working in partnership with other similar organisations such as Richmond and Hambleton Furniture Store in Northallerton and York Community Furniture Store to ensure we are sharing resources where it makes sense to and meeting local needs in our communities.

Whilst we are looking for premises (a space to trade from and a workshop to carry out upcycling/refurbishment) we are selling donated items online, initially using Facebook Marketplace and Shpock as these are free to use and allows us to concentrate on our local population.  Please like and follow us to see all the new items we will be uploading on a daily basis as well as news of other Clock Works businesses in development.

What we are looking for:

We will welcome donations of furniture, large electrical goods such as fridges, freezers, tumble dryers (but not those that require a water supply such as washing machines as we have no way of testing them) large household items which are suitable for reuse (such as mirrors and other wall decoration).

All soft furnishings and beds need to have a fire safety label which indicates compliance with the 1988 Fire Regulations.  We are unable to accept items without these.

Electrical goods must be in working order and we will PAT test them before sale. We cannot accept damp, water damaged, very worn or dirty items – please understand that items we are unable to re-sell cost us money to dispose of.

We can arrange to collect at no charge or you can deliver items to us at The Clock if you prefer.

Items in high demand are:

  • Beds
  • TV Units
  • TVs
  • Storage Units
  • Sofas
  • Wardrobes

If you would like to arrange for us to collect donated items please call Suzy at The Clock on 01845 524494.

Date for the Diary

24th September, 5:30pm at Thirsk Methodist Church on St. James Green -  Business Community Engagement Event

Calling members of our local business community! Please join us for a cuppa and cake while we explain our plans for developing social enterprises under our Clock Works banner.  We want to share our ideas with you, hear your thoughts and concerns so we can make sure we make a positive contribution to our business community. We’ll also be asking for volunteers to form a Steering Group that will meet quarterly to provide advice, guidance, mentorship and scrutiny to the leadership team. We hope to see you there! Please respond to the event on Facebook, email or telephone The Clock if you plan to attend (just so we can make sure we have enough cake!).

Thanks to…

Our friends at St. Columbas Church in Topcliffe who have arranged storage space for donated items while we are sourcing premises.

Thirsk Auction Mart who are regularly donating and delivering their unsold Furniture Auction items to us.

Our friends at Broadacres and their Richmond and Hambleton Community Furniture Store, and York/Scarborough Community Furniture Stores who have shared their experience and offered their ongoing support and partnership.

The Methodist Churches Circuit who have allocated funding towards the costs of setting up our Furniture Store venture.

All of you who have already liked, followed and shared our social media pages and your lovely messages/comments of support.
